The Rule of Three
Monday, 05 January 2009

One of my favorite devices in writing is the Rule of Three. As a kid, I was first exposed to Three's when I heard School House Rock: Three is a Magic Number. You know the tune: "3,6,9... 12,15,18... 21,24,27... 30." Three's are important in shaping good comedy: if you want to drive home the punch line, repeat the set up three times. I noticed too, as I read more and more fiction, that authors generally used three adjectives to describe people, places and things. Three's hold special places in religion, politics, and decorating.  Look, I just used three.
